Alfred Hitchcock did not win any Oscars, even though he is considered by many as one of the top directors in history, having made 53 films over his directing career from 1925 through 1976. Although Hitchcock was nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a Best Director Oscar five different times, the only recognition he received from the Academy was an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1968 to honor his consistent production achievement. Hitchcock did make Oscar history for the shortest acceptance speech for his two word “Thank you,” speech to accept his 1968 accolade.

More about Alfred Hitchcock:

  • Hitchcock reportedly never watched any of his finished films because he found them frightening.
  • In addition to suffering from a binge eating disorder, Hitchcock also had phobias, including a fear of the police and a fear of eggs.
  • Hitchcock’s 1929 film “Blackmail” is considered the first British sound film or “talkie” and although he never won an Oscar for directing, his first film he directed in the US, “Rebecca” won the 1939 Best Picture Oscar.
